GeoExplorer teaching privacy notice

Prepared 24 October 2026. This teaching application is provided by Bruno Gérard, Center for Applied Systems Analysis, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, UM6P. For questions, contact your instructor or the person who supplied this website.

Your Google account and Earth Engine project

You choose your Google account and enter your own registered Google Earth Engine project ID. Google handles sign-in. GeoExplorer requests only Earth Engine read-only permission, which allows computations and map rendering. It does not request access to Gmail, Google Drive, your profile, billing administration or permission to write Earth Engine assets.

Your short-lived access token stays in browser memory and is sent to Google Earth Engine to authorize requests. It is not saved to browser storage, application files, downloadable results or the hosting server. Signing out, closing or reloading the page clears the application session; Google may retain its separate account session and consent. You can revoke consent through your Google Account's third-party connections settings.

Analysis data

Earth Engine receives your selected project ID, regions, dates, dataset selections and computation expressions. Google processes those requests under your account and project. Numerical clustering and statistical calculations run in your browser. Imported CSV observations stay in the browser. Downloads are created locally; you decide where to save or share them. The application has no shared computation server, instructor credential fallback, user database or application analytics.

The optional SPAM mask reads a public teaching dataset. It does not use the dataset owner's credentials or project as your computation project. Map tiles are fetched from Google and, for basemaps, OpenStreetMap and Esri. These services receive ordinary network information such as IP address and tile requests, which can indicate the map area viewed.

Hosting and retention

Cloudflare serves the website and static files. Google serves sign-in and Earth Engine services. These providers may process network and security logs under their own policies; the instructor does not control their retention. Browser caches may retain public website files. GeoExplorer retains active results in memory until the page is closed or reloaded; local downloaded files remain until you delete them. No access tokens are included in those downloads.

Keep the tab open while processing. Disconnecting prevents new requests but cannot guarantee immediate cancellation of a computation already accepted by Google.
